General Chemistry Transfer Credit (Chem 131, 132)

Chemistry courses at four year colleges or universities will be accepted for University of Rochester credit. Approval for transfer credit for Chemistry 131 and 132 is given by the Center for Academic Support. The following descriptions are used for transfer credit for General Chemistry courses.

General Chemistry courses offered for transfer credit must be part of a two-semester sequence. Completion of the first course of a two semester sequence will earn transfer credit for Chem 131, while completion of the second course will earn transfer credit for Chem 132, regardless of the material covered. Students may choose to receive transfer credit for either Chemistry 131 for General Chemistry I courses (see below). Likewise, students may choose to receive transfer credit for either Chemistry 132 for General Chemistry II courses.

Chemistry 131 - Chemical Concepts, Systems, and Practices I
This is the first semester of a two-semester sequence of General Chemistry. At other schools the equivalent course may be called General Chemistry I, Introductory Chemistry I, Principles of Chemistry I, or related names. Chemistry 131 satisfies all departmental requirements for a General Chemistry I course.

Chemistry 132 - Chemical Concepts, Systems, and Practices II
This is the second semester of a two semester sequence of General Chemistry. At most other schools this is called General Chemistry II, Introductory Chemistry II, or Principles of Chemistry II, etc. Chemistry 132 satisfies all departmental requirements for a General Chemistry II course.

Credit for Chemistry 131 or Chemistry 132 requires the completion of a laboratory component. The laboratory may be an integral part of the course, as it is at Rochester, or it may be a separate course. If the course taken for transfer credit does not include an integral laboratory, then both a lecture course and a lab course must be completed to obtain transfer credit.

General Chemistry courses offered for transfer credit must be part of a two-semester sequence. Completion of the first course of a two semester sequence will earn transfer credit for Chem 131, while completion of the second course will earn transfer credit for Chem 132, regardless of the material covered. Requests for exceptions to this rule require chemistry department approval.

General Chemistry courses at Monroe Community College are on an approved list of courses receiving transfer credit. Please consult with the Center for Academic Support for details. The department will consider General Chemistry courses taken at other community colleges for transfer credit. A grade of B or better is required to receive transfer credit for courses taken at a Community College. To request transfer credit for these courses, students must complete a Course Approval Form and must provide the course description and the name and author(s) of the textbook used to the chemistry faculty member assigned to handle "Approval of Transfer Credit" as listed on the departmental web site: Undergraduate Advising Committee.

Organic Chemistry Transfer Credit (Chem 203, 204, 207, 208)

Organic Chemistry courses at four year colleges or universities will be accepted for University of Rochester credit. Approval for transfer credit for Chemistry 203, 204, 207, and 208 is given by the Center for Academic Support. The following descriptions are used for transfer for Organic Chemistry courses.

Chemistry 203 - Organic Chemistry I
First course of a two course organic chemistry lecture sequence. At other schools this is generally titled Organic Chemistry I.

Chemistry 204 - Organic Chemistry II
Second course of a two course Organic Chemistry lecture sequence. At other schools this is generally titled Organic Chemistry II.

Chemistry 207 - Organic Chemistry Laboratory I
This one-credit course is the first course of a two course Organic Chemistry laboratory course.

Chemistry 208 - Organic Chemistry Laboratory II
This one-credit course is the first course of a two course Organic Chemistry laboratory course.

Lecture and laboratory courses in Organic Chemistry are separate courses at the University of Rochester and at many other schools. Some colleges, however, offer Organic Chemistry courses with an integrated laboratory; in these cases, UR credit will be awarded for both lecture and laboratory courses (for example Chem 203 & 207 or Chem 204 & 208). An exception to this occurs if the student has completed (at the U of R) the organic laboratory course (e.g., Chem 208); the student may request transfer credit for only a lecture course (e.g., Chem 204) even though the summer course at another college includes both lecture and laboratory.

Organic Chemistry courses offered for transfer credit must be part of a two-course sequence. Completion of the first course of a two-course sequence will earn transfer credit for Chem 203 and/or 207, while completion of the second course will earn transfer credit for Chem 204 and/or 208, regardless of the material covered. Requests for exceptions to this rule require chemistry department approval.
