W.D. Walters Teaching Awards

Three graduate students, John DiMaio, Todd Doran, and James Morris, received the W.D. Walters Teaching Award for their outstanding undergraduate teaching in the 2008-2009 academic year. This award is given in memory of the late Professor W.D. Walters and the standards of excellence and achievement established by him. Danae Walters was born in Houston, Texas in 1914, and graduated from Washington University in 1934. He did his graduate work at Hopkins and spent a postdoctoral year as a Warner fellow at Leipzig. He joined the University of Rochester in 1938 and died at the young age of 53 in 1968. Danae was well known for his work in gas phase chemical kinetics. He was a particularly able and devoted teacher both at the undergraduate and graduate level. The award consists of a cash prize, but more importantly, indicates our sincere appreciation for the commitment and achievements of the recipients with respect to undergraduate curriculum.
