Interdisciplinary Research
The department encourages interdisciplinary research through its organization into clusters representing the following areas:
- Biological Chemistry
- Materials Chemistry
- Synthesis, Catalyst and Mechanism
- Chemical Physics
A number of our students have joint advisors. These collaborations between groups often lead to cross-disciplinary learning opportunities. In addition, our proximity to other departments including Earth and Environmental Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry & Biophysics, Physics, Optics, and Biomedical Engineering facilitates inter-departmental interactions.
A number of University of Rochester research centers are closely affiliated with Chemistry: the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, the Center for Photoinduced Charge Transfer (joint venture with Kodak and Xerox), and the Center for Future Health (preventative medicine technologies).
