The Program's Scope and Objectives
The University of Rochester has been awarded funding from the U. S. Department of Education for
Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN)
Fellowship Program. The GAANN Program provides
fellowships to excellent students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in the Department of Chemistry.
This program will enable a greater number of students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds,
including women and minorities, to pursue doctoral degrees. Our Department will provide the resources
for outstanding graduate education and training, including course work, workshops,
seminars and research projects that focus on approaches to important chemical and interdisciplinary
problems, as well as a structured, supervised teaching experience and professional development and
support, as students progress toward their Ph.D. degree.
Eligibility Requirements

Full-time and unconditional enrollment and/or acceptance as a graduate student at the University of
Rochester's Department of Chemistry. (Apply
to Graduate School)

Demonstration of financial need based on student financial aid (FAFSA
form)
-
Plans to pursue the highest possible degree in the Chemical Sciences, the Ph.D.

Plans for a future career in Teaching or Research
-
United States Citizenship or Nationals with one of the following residency requirements:

Permanent Resident of U.S.
-
Permanent Resident of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands

Provide evidence from the Immigration and Naturalization Service that they are in
the United States for other than a
temporary purpose with the intention of becoming permanent residents

Members of underrepresented groups (African-Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Americans,
Hispanics, Native Hawaiians,
Pacific Islanders and women) are particularly encouraged to apply
GAANN Fellows will be selected from the pool of graduate students in good standing, with special
consideration for members of underrepresented groups.
Application Process
Please provide the following information to the GAANN Project Director, Co-Director or the
Graduate Studies Coordinator in the Chemistry Department:

Documentation that the FAFSA form has been completed and results have been forwarded to
the Financial Aid Office at the
University of Rochester; Application due by June 30, 2008

GAANN Fellowship Application due by June 30, 2008

The GAANN Program in the Department of Chemistry will select fellows by September 1, 2008.

The Department of Chemistry is committed to providing stipend and health insurance support to our graduate
students for a total of five years of
training to complete the doctoral degree in Chemistry, regardless of their selection for a GAANN Fellowship.
