The strong research emphasis of the Ph.D. program, the interactive atmosphere of the Department, the hands-on instrumentation, and the rigorous course work produce resourceful doctoral graduates who successfully compete for employment opportunities. These include positions at major chemical companies, pharmaceutical laboratories, photonics, materials science, nanotechnology, and biotechnology.

A significant number of Rochester Ph.D. graduates go on to obtain faculty appointments or join government laboratories, either directly from graduate school or after finishing a period of postdoctoral research and study.
