Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It is with great sadness that we inform you that our friend and colleague Carl A. Whiteman, Jr. passed away on Monday, February 26, 2007, after a massive stroke.
Carl’s long association with the University of Rochester spanned 50 years, first as a student (BS in Physics 1950) followed by many years of service as a laboratory instructor and research associate in the Department of Chemistry. Even after his "retirement" in 1986, Carl continued to work in the Department, visiting the campus daily, checking instrumentation, helping with the Junior labs, and serving as our unofficial alumni historian. He is remembered by generations of chemistry undergraduates for his integrity, his high standards and his role in mentoring students in methods of careful, economic, and honest data collection and analysis.
In 1992, the Department of Chemistry honored his outstanding dedication by establishing the Carl A. Whiteman, Jr. Teaching Award, given annually to recognize exemplary teaching by an undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Chemistry.
A memorial service was held in Rochester on Saturday, March 10 at 2:00 pm in the Interfaith Chapel on River Campus, followed by a reception on the River Level of the Chapel. Those wishing to express their condolences to his family or memories of Carl may do so through Ms. Debra Haring, Department of Chemistry, at 585-275-2915 or .
