Physical Methods in Inorganic Chemistry
Instructor(s): Patrick L. HollandPrerequisites: CHM 211/411 or a course in inorganic chemistry. CHM 422 is strongly recommended.Crosslisting: None.Course Summary:
Molecular and electronic structure determination of inorganic compounds and metal complexes; spectroscopic and physical methods that are used in inorganic chemistry. The main focus will be practical rather than theoretical. The course will culminate in a project that combines techniques to answer questions about coordination complexes.
Course Topics:
- Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy
- NMR spectroscopy on paramagnetic compounds
- EPR spectroscopy
- Magnetism
- Electronic absorption (UV-vis, CD)
- Resonance Raman spectroscopy
- Mössbauer spectroscopy
- Electrochemistry
