Instructor(s): Patrick L. Holland

Prerequisites: CHM 211/411 or a course in inorganic chemistry. CHM 422 is strongly recommended.
Crosslisting: None.

Course Summary:
Molecular and electronic structure determination of inorganic compounds and metal complexes; spectroscopic and physical methods that are used in inorganic chemistry. The main focus will be practical rather than theoretical. The course will culminate in a project that combines techniques to answer questions about coordination complexes.

Course Topics:
  • Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy
  • NMR spectroscopy on paramagnetic compounds
  • EPR spectroscopy
  • Magnetism
  • Electronic absorption (UV-vis, CD)
  • Resonance Raman spectroscopy
  • Mössbauer spectroscopy
  • Electrochemistry
