John S. Muenter and Robert W. Kreilick
become Professors Emeriti of Chemistry
July 1, 2007

On July 1, 2007, Professors Robert W. Kreilick and John S. Muenter entered a new stage of their careers, that of Professors Emeriti of Chemistry. The Chemistry Department was pleased to celebrate their many distinguished years, 43 and 38 respectively, of dedication to teaching, research, and service to Chemistry, the College, and the University, on the occasion of their retirement.

Bob Kreilick came to Rochester in 1964 (Ph.D. 1964, Washington University) and made important contributions to our understanding of the physical and electronic properties of free radical compounds, as well as contributions to the design, development, and utilization of new instrumentation such as a low field EPR spectrometer and an ENDOR spectrometer.

John Muenter joined the Chemistry faculty in 1969 (Ph.D. 1965, Stanford University) and made important contributions in the study of high-resolution molecular spectroscopy with molecular beam electric resonance methods and the study of vibrationally-excited species, including spectra of van der Waals molecules and dipole moments of molecules in excited states.

Both are renowned for their innovative, collaborative development of the physical chemistry laboratory, a rigorous program that is viewed by UR chemistry majors as an essential “rite of passage” and by colleagues across the country as the “right way to do physical chemistry lab,” and for which Bob and John received the UR 2004 Goergen Award for Curricular Achievement in Undergraduate Education.

We wish John and Bob all the best as Emeriti Professors.
